FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (June, 2019) – Proudly led by Viewpoint Photographic Art Center – a non-profit organization located in Midtown Sacramento – in collaboration with many partners including the City of Sacramento, the presentation of the second Photography Month April 2020 is now underway. Event organizers are hoping to enhance and grow the successful event first offered in April 2018 which had over 40 participating organizations and 60 events offered throughout the month.
Complete with a robust, diverse and ever-increasing series of upcoming events and activities that celebrate the visual arts, Photography Month Sacramento is a new, region-wide collaborative effort designed to create an accessible and visually-exciting collective experience that brings people together. With special events happening throughout the month, Photography Month creates exciting and new opportunities for galleries, museums, educational institutions, libraries, retail establishments, bars, restaurants, photographers and patrons to share, celebrate and elevate the art of photography. Interested participants throughout Sacramento, Yolo, Placer and Nevada counties are encouraged to create and share their own exhibits, displays, lectures, receptions workshops, demonstrations, temporary public art displays, art walks and other special events to help showcase the art of photography. The month-long calendar of events will be posted on the Photography Month website for interested community members to discover, appreciate and enjoy.
“The vision behind Photography Month Sacramento is to bring together our region’s vibrant and thriving visual arts community to collaborate on a powerful series of photography exhibits, art displays, workshops and lectures that will excite and engage the public,”said Roberta McClellan, Executive Director for Viewpoint Photography Art Center and the event director. “The month-long focus offers a way to encourage more people to explore art spaces that will help share and define our collective local voice as an inclusive and vital arts community.”
Why Photography Month?
It is increasingly important in an age of media inundation to encourage purposeful displays of photography by artists seeking to share a story or a moment of beauty. Photography Month creates new opportunities for galleries, museums, educational institutions, photographers and patrons to share a collective experience in the visual arts, which is engaging and highly accessible.
How Does It Work?
Through a series of events and hands-on activities, scheduled throughout our region, Photography Month Sacramento will create a new bi-annual event for the visual arts.
Interested participants are encouraged to create their own exhibits, displays, lectures, workshops and events to celebrate the art of photography.
How Can Educational Institutions Get Involved?
Photography Month Sacramento offers a variety of opportunities for educational participation and outreach on a region wide level.
High Schools: Working on a district level, Viewpoint will provide access to its online educational programs and special activities, which may be viewed at www.viewpointgallery.org.
Community Colleges and Universities: In addition to the ongoing student programs at Viewpoint, there will also be a special Open Call Exhibit for college students with cash prizes sponsored by Viewpoint. This special exhibit will be dedicated to college level photography students.
